Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Tourist Attractions

Africa’s very first transfrontier park, Kgalagadi (“place of thirst” in the San language) was officially opened by the presidents of Botswana and South Africa in 2000.

At 35 551 km², this large semi-desert region is untrammeled and ecologically intact – an increasingly rare phenomenon in Africa. Its vastness allows nomadic ungulate populations and their predators to stay in balance with their environment and there is little need for management intervention.

To date, Kgalagadi is the only peace park where tourists can move freely across an international border. Tourists enter at a single joint tourism access facility at Twee Rivieren, the first in Africa, to visit the entire transfrontier park spanning the border between Botswana and South Africa – previously two separate national parks.

Botswana

The Ta Shebube desert circuit of Rooiputs and Polentswa is a new and exciting tourist destination on the Botswana side of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The camps promote high quality, low density tourism.

South Africa

On the South African side there are three rest camps (Twee Rivieren, Nossob and Mata Mata) and six unfenced wilderness camps (Kalahari Tent Camp, Bitterpan, Grootkolk, Ukaruus, Kieliekrankie and Gharagab). Camping sites are only available at Twee Rivieren, Nossob and Mata-Mata and a restaurant is available only at Twee Rivieren. Bookings can be made at Twee Rivieren and Nossob for night drives and guided day walks.
